(Left)
The Fellowship Hall, looking north toward the old narthex- the walkways were built to provide access for workers and viewing
of the area below the floor.
Note that there is no damage to the ceiling or upper walls. The Fellowship Hall took in a storm surge of about 3 feet.
Large plastic hoses piped in hot, dry air during the autumn of 2008, covering the interior of the building's first & second floors.
The drying out and mold remediation began immediately,
as soon as the church could be accessed following Hurricane Ike.

Beneath the Fellowship Hall, looking east - the Fellowship Hall is
the oldest part of the church building. Note the brick
foundation and old floor joists from the 1870's.
(Right) Walkway toward Sanctuary door. Wood from Fellowship Hall & Sanctuary walls was removed, labeled and numbered. The grand piano in Fellowship Hall floated & is repairable. Wood from the sanctuary floor has been used as a border for the floor in the new church parlor.

(Right) "The Chapel" - built after 1900, changed from a classroom into a chapel in the 1950's. The renovation of the English Chapel revealed substantial termite damage from the floor to the ceiling. The pews in this room were destroyed by the storm surge.
(Below) The narthex at the Church Street entrance, with staircase to floor above Fellowship Hall.

(Right) Under the kitchen floor, generations of plumbing pipes on view.

(Left) Looking west down the Education Wing hallway, through the 1953 wing to the 1972 annex. Former church offices are to the right - storm surge levels rose above the desk tops in the downstairs offices, classes & copier room. The first floor layout has been reconfigured, with the offices moving to the other side of the hallway.
(Below Right) The Church Parlor
looking west - the 1953 section of the building has wooden floors. New
studs & drywall are being installed. Carpeting has been installed in
the hallway, offices & some first floor classrooms. Early childhood and
nursery rooms have new wood floors.
(Below) First floor restrooms, looking south - flooring and walls removed, dried out, & ready to be designed as ADA-compliant. Retained wall studs were disinfected.
(Below) The first floor of the
Education Wing. Children's restrooms on first floor have been made
ADA-compliant (for wheelchair access.)0The 1972
Angerhoffer Annex has concrete floors.

(Above) The Sanctuary walkway. Wainscoting (labeled & numbered), pews, grand piano, communion table, pulpit and other carved furniture was removed for remediation and restoration. Walkways provided access in the early days of work and made a cross pattern through the middle of the Sanctuary.
(Below Left) Termite-eaten 1880's joist exposed when the Sanctuary floor was removed. (Solving the mystery of rattling pews.)
(Below
& Right) Looking up, the windows and ceiling are as beautiful as ever.
Restoration work is to stabilize and protect the windows for the future.
