"Helpings of Seconds and Fourths"
November and
December were busy months for the youth of First Pres. After enjoying a
YouTube viewing party, we got busy raising money for 2012 camps. With the
help of baker Tom Baumeister (Leslie’s future father-in-law), the youth
made 70 dozen rolls that were sold the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving. So
far all the reviews are great. Mr. Tom is already planning next year’s
event. During Dickens on the Strand, the youth sold parking spots, first
at the lot on 20th and Church St and later the Zander lot.
Between the two fund raisers, the youth have raised almost $700 to help
offset the costs of the Cho-Yeh Conclaves and IMPACT mission trip this
year.
Just in time
for the holiday season, the youth baked cookies and made Christmas cards
to send to soldiers overseas. Forty soldiers will be benefiting from our
efforts: twenty Army and twenty Marines will enjoy some goodies over the
holiday season. Word came back from our Army contact that the cookies were
a big hit. The soldiers even put the Christmas cards on their desks.
On Sunday
evening, December 11, saw the return of the Children (and Youth) Christmas
Pageant. 19 youth and children participated in re-enacting the Nativity
story. An offering taken during the service was split between the
Salvation Army and the Arthritis Foundation/"Kids Get Arthritis Too." Each
group got over $150.
The youth rang in the New Year with
a lock-in. We had a blast! Early in the night, we talked about the New
Year and made some resolutions before watching the ball drop in New York.
After ringing in the New Year with sparkling juice, the youth enjoyed
playing games through the wee hours of the morning. All the youth made it
until about 5 am before some started falling sleep. The event was
definitely memorable for all who participated.
More amazing events:
In March (2nd-4th) we will be
returning to the Conclaves at Camp Cho-Yeh in Livingston, TX.
On March 31, 10:00 a.m., the Youth will
host an Easter Egg Hunt for younger children. Later that afternoon,
2:00 p.m., they will have a Car Wash Fund-raiser (location TBA) for the
upcoming '30 Hour Famine.'
In April (20th-21st), the Youth will
participate in '30 Hour Famine' for the first time in many, many
years.
In June (12th-17th) we will again
participate in a Mission Trip - IMPACT (Inspiring and eMpowering an Army of Christian
Teens) in San Antonio.
