Galveston Reads 2012 Discussion at FPC:

First Presbyterian Galveston is hosting a Galveston Reads 2012 discussion of the novel Still Alice, on Thursday, February 2, 6:00-7:30 p.m.  This is FPC Galveston's first participation in the annual Galveston Reads program.  Joan Hyatt will lead the discussion at First Presbyterian.

Still Alice, a novel by Lisa Genova, is the story of a fifty year-old professor of neuropsychology at Harvard University who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease.  The New York Times best-selling novel follows an accomplished woman slowly losing her thoughts and memories to a harrowing disease, only to discover that each day brings new ways of living and loving.

Besides discussions held at local churches & other venues, Galveston Reads 2012 events in January through March include a Professors Panel Discussion, a movie night at Texas A&M Galveston, a photography panel at Rosenberg Library during Art Walk, a medical forum at UTMB, and a visit to Galveston by the author to speak at UTMB and at Galveston College.  For further information, please visit www.galvestonreads.org or visit Galveston Read's Facebook page.

Austin College Weekend at First Presbyterian Galveston, February 17th - 19th:

Our congregation will be privileged that weekend to host a group of students and faculty from Austin College, an extraordinary church-related college in Sherman, Texas.  Austin College was founded in 1849 by Daniel Baker, then the minister of this church.  AC has continued to flourish and today is widely recognized for its academic excellence and as a college that changes lives.  Rev. Dr. David Green, pastor at First Presbyterian, was a student at Austin College when his life was changed for the better.  On February 19th, our worship service will include participation by AC students and the college President, Dr. Marjorie Hass.

Can you host one or more Austin College students in your home that weekend?  If you are willing, please contact the church office at 409.762.8638, email scoggin@galvpres.net or sign up on the sheet on the information table in Fellowship Hall.

Lisa Velasquez's delicious recipe for.......

GRAPE SALAD

2 lbs whole grapes

1 block (8 oz.) cream cheese

1 8 oz container sour cream

½ c. white sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla

Mix all but grapes together well (will be a little lumpy, that's ok). Fold in grapes until mixed and coated. Place into dish (7 x 11 works perfectly).

Mix together 1 cup brown sugar and ½ c. to 1 c. chopped pecans (amount is up to you). Cover top of grape mixture evenly. Refrigerate overnight.

Can also make the night before and freeze - saves trying to keep it refrigerated or cool for a long period.
